Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy is a manual manipulation of the body’s soft tissue for the purpose of stimulating circulation and promoting relaxation. It has been used in many world cultures for more than 4,000 years. Massage allows you quiet time to focus on yourself and become more connected to your body. It is generally used for the reduction of stress and pain, and has been shown to boost the immune system as well.

Since most diseases are exacerbated by stress, massage can help you become and stay healthier. Massage can help with stress reduction, anxiety, relaxation, muscle aches and pains, sleep problems, depression, immune system function, sports conditioning, injury rehabilitation, fertility enhancement, and much more.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu, meaning ‘finger pressure’, is a Japanese form of bodywork therapy.  This form is different from the rubbing and kneading technique of a Swedish massage most of us are accustomed to and it certainly heals on a different level.  The therapist locates a particular point along one of the body’s meridians and applies pressure to that area, to restore a balanced flow of energy. The pressure can be applied gently with the fingers or may be applied forcefully with the point of the elbow depending on the location of the point and the severity of the blockage. The therapist may also incorporate stretching, holding or rotating various parts of the body.

Similar Oriental Medicine principles apply when working with a shiatsu practitioner.  The focus of your treatment is to maintain a healthy balance within the body as we do in the outside world.  Shiatsu medicine is based on the observations of the natural world and link’s people’s tendencies to particular ailments of these observations and responses.

The Experience

When you arrive for a treatment, you will be asked to wear loose, comfortable clothing and clean socks.  You will keep your clothes on, and often the treatment will take place on a floor mat, such as a futon (most can accommodate with a table if you need it). The treatment involves a series of stretches and energetic movement of the channels. The channels are similar to those in Chinese medicine, but there are several differences.  Shiastu is truly a profound massage.
